Drywall Remodeling in Your Bathroom? Consider Waterproof Options

Adding new drywall to your home is a crucial part of the remodeling process that ensures you get the best results. However, bathroom remodeling is a unique process that will require you to use a pretty specific drywall. As a result, you may want to consider the best drywall remodeling Cedar Rapids, Iowa has to offer to ensure that you get the best installation results for your home.

Water Damage May Affect Your Remodeling

Bathrooms are unique rooms in a house because of their high concentration of water and other types of moisture. As a result, you must take the time to understand your drywall before you get into remodeling fully. Many people think that it is okay to put up standard drywall but end up suffering severe water damage. As a result, they either need to repair or replace this drywall in their homes or in any other area of a building.

For example, water on your drywall may cause damage, mainly if it is sustained exposure. However, even occasional splashes of water from a bathtub or sink may cause complications with your drywall. Beyond the damage that it may cause to the structure of the drywall, you may also run into mold and mildew issues that compromise the health and integrity of your house.

As a result, you need to pay attention to the type of drywall that you add to your bathroom. Some people will attach standard drywall and think that it is good enough to protect their walls. However, this is rarely the case. Unfortunately, standard drywall that works great in your kitchen or your bedrooms is not the type that you should use for drywall remodeling in a bathroom.

Water-Resistant Drywall is Available

When considering your drywall remodeling for your bathroom, you should consider seeking out water-resistant drywall. Most drywall types are made with a robust gypsum-based core that is strong enough to help with many kinds of damage. However, this drywall isn’t naturally water-resistant and may experience a loss if you try to install it in your bathroom instead of other types.

Thankfully, drywall manufacturers have invented types that will resist damage to water and other issues that may affect your bathroom. These boards are known as “green boards” and are designed to help keep your bathroom as secure as possible. Typically, that’s where most contractors install them because they provide a maximum level of protection and don’t cost a lot compared to other types.

That said, this type of drywall is not without limitations. These limitations must be understood if you plan on having a high-quality home with limited damage to your walls. Too many people assume that they can simply install this drywall in their bathroom and leave it at that. Instead, you need to make sure that you take several steps to understand the quality of this board fully.

Understand Its Limitations

While green board is an excellent choice for your bathroom and should be considered there any time that you want to remodel your bathroom, there are essential elements to consider when installing it. First of all, you need to understand that this type of board isn’t completely protected from water. Too many people going through drywall remodeling in their bathroom assume it will always protect against water.

For example, you shouldn’t place drywall directly behind the tiles in your shower or other areas that come into direct contact with water frequently. Remember – water-resistant is not the same thing as waterproof. While water-resistant boards are protected from moisture in the air and occasional contact with some water sources, they are not completely protected and will become damaged.

Typically, you need to add cement board and other waterproof items directly behind your sink, tub, and in other areas that are profoundly affected by water. This installation process is one that is pretty much the same as what you would do with ordinary drywall. As a result, you may think that you can do this installation on your own. However, you may still want to hire experts instead.

Should You Try This Process Yourself?

If you think that you can handle drywall remodeling in your bathroom and throughout your home, you may need to think again. Too many people are under the mistaken impression that drywall is “easy” to add to a home. This idea couldn’t be further from the truth. Drywall is a pretty tricky element to add to a home because it is exact and requires careful handling and proper installation methods. These techniques are often too tough for the average DIY homeowner to handle, no matter their experience.

This fact is even more true for homes utilizing green board or cement boards in the bathroom. While the installation process for these boards isn’t much different than standard drywall, making a mistake will cause them to be more exposed to water than necessary. As a result, you may experience damage that spreads throughout your bathroom and which makes your installation less effective. This problem has affected many homeowners across the nation.

So make sure that you contact drywall experts when considering doing any remodeling in your bathroom. You should also contact these experts if you are interested in adding new drywall or remodeling it in other areas of your home as well. With their help, you can ensure that you keep your house looking great and robust. Just as importantly, you can protect it from various issues that may occur if you do make mistakes and cause your drywall to fail unexpectedly.
